Architectural Inspiration week - The Vessel, Hudson Yards NYC
It's like architecture in a fever dream. It's like a structure pulled straight from the minds of an architect in the movie Inception.
Hundreds of people tossed in the air and caught by webs of copper, suspended gracefully among the stairways and landings that comprise an improbably large public sculpture.
I can't describe how excited I am that this folly, this unlikely piece of public art is getting built as the centerpiece of the most improbable new development on the west side of Manhattan.
It's brilliant and terrifying.
The last time I was in New York, I paid a visit to the High Line park. The entire time, I was in awe. I marveled at the little gardens along the elevated former rail line. There were endless gathering spots, places to rest your weary feet, amazing views of the glass facades of nearby buildings.
I try to imagine now how fantastic that voyage along the elevated parks of the High Line are going to be when you have the Vessel at Hudson Yards waiting for you at the end.
Imagine the races you can have with people who are slow at climbing stairs. Imagine the views of the canyons of New York you'll have at three-quarters of the way up. Imagine the team-building trust exercise opportunities this thing will provide.
This is people-scale design done on a grand scale. It's going to be wonderful, I hope.
